The Gathering Place
A key factor to the neighborhood is its rich history. The areas around Amaranth Bakery was once a German immigrant filled community and has since been populated by a diverse group of people including Hmong and African Americans. As a community in transition economically, socially, and culturally, the spaces and their immediate surroundings become ever shifting as well. Michel Foucault describes these shifiting spaces as heterotopias.
The Gathering Place is a landscape design which uses the intricate layers of the landscape, the built environment, and the human interactions within a space in order to maximize the interactions and connections between those who live in the neighborhood. Located next to a historic church, this project examines the meaning of the term “congregation” to explore how the ritual of gathering and assembly can spill out of the confines of the sacred into the secular landscape. |
