The Narrative Thread
Amaranth Alley is a neighborhood very much in transition, and there are very few long-standing community hubs (Amaranth Bakery being on of the few). There is a strong desire for community well being, but a cultural disconnect still exists as the community works to establish itself.
Part of the theoretical basis for our design intervention is creating a neighborhood center around which the community can galvanize. As a group we chose four vacant lots to build on, each of which provides the community spaces for cultural and social interaction. |

The project proposes a year-round indoor marketplace coupled with a grocery store. This Market-Grocery, supplements the nearby Amaranth Bakery, and provides a unique resource for the surrounding community by providing a year-round market and a much needed place to buy groceries. The Market-Grocery draws patrons and customers from across the city.

Fairy Tale Alley is an infill project that examines the creative possibilities of intimate social interactions and communications within the mundane setting of a back alley. Utilizing above- and below-ground elements, the project provides spaces for storytelling, cultural performances, food, sounds, and memories. By providing a space for creative exchanges of cultural knowledge, this project seeks to transform an ordinary and banal place into an extraordinary sequence of memorable and evocative venues.
The Gathering is a landscape design which uses the intricate layers of the landscape, the built environment, and the human interactions within a space in order to maximize the interactions and connections between those who live in the neighborhood. Located next to a historic church, this project explores the meaning of the term “congregation” to explore how the ritual of gathering and assembly can spill out of the confines of the sacred into the secular landscape.
